(Halifax County, Va.) – Human remains have been found in a wooded area of Halifax County and sheriff’s investigators suspect foul play.

The discovery was made by a hunting party at about 1:30 Wednesday afternoon near the 4000 block of Sandy Ridge Road in the northern end of Halifax County.

Sheriff’s investigators from Halifax and Charlotte Counties responded. The remains were located in a heavily wooded area about 700 yards off of Sandy Ridge Road.

Special agents with the Virginia State Police were notified and helped with the recovery of the remains, which were sent to the medical examiner’s office in Richmond for identification.

Foul play is suspected and the investigation is continuing.
