• The National Weather Service’s latest forecast calls for mostly cloudy skies during the early evening, and then gradual clearing, with a low around 22. On Sunday, sunny conditions are expected, with a high near 40. Wind will be from the west at 7 to 10 mph, with gusts as high as 21 mph.

• Any person in need of shelter should call the non-emergency number for the Emergency Communications Center. That number is (434) 799-5111, option 8. The center will notify one of the participating agencies to meet the need.

• Danville Utilities and contract line crews continue to respond to reports of power outages. The buildup of wet, heavy snow on lines and tree limbs are the primary cause of the outages. Currently, we have about 800 customers without power. These outages are scattered throughout our service territory. Crews will work throughout the night to restore service.

• The city expects to restore power service to all customers currently without power in the next 12 to 18 hours. However, additional power outages are expected to develop overnight due to snow freezing on power lines and tree limbs. On Sunday, additional outages are likely. As the buildup of snow on lines and tree limbs melts and falls, then lines and tree limbs will retract. In addition, wind gusts as high as 21 mph are in the forecast.

• Customers whose residence or business is without power should call Danville Utilities at (434) 773-8300 to report the outage.

• Customers should note that during the power restoration effort there are times when crews must temporarily shut off power to an area to make repairs. Once major lines serving a neighborhood are repaired, power may be on at some houses and off at others because of additional damage to lines and equipment serving those homes. Some houses may have electric service when others do not because houses may be on different lines or circuits.

• Each outage has different circumstances and some may take longer to identify the source of the problem. Widespread damage makes it more difficult to accurately predict when a particular customer’s power will be restored.

• Customers using medical devices must make other arrangements in the event of a power outage and temporarily go to a location or medical facility that does have power. For customers unable to make other arrangements, they should call the non-emergency number for the Emergency Communications Center. That number is (434) 799-5111, option 8. The center will notify one of the participating agencies to meet the need.

• Public Works snowplow crews have cleared all streets. Crews will remain on duty overnight to place sand and salt in areas as needed. Slick spots will develop on streets overnight due to below freezing temperatures. Temperatures today caused some melting, with the heavy buildup of wet, heavy snow on lines and tree limbs falling onto street surfaces.

• Danville Transit continues to operate fixed route service and Reserve-A-Ride service as standard.
