(South Boston, Va.) – A New Year’s Day fire sent a South Boston couple fleeing into the cold.

A Monday afternoon fire gutted much of the interior of an older, brick home on North Main Street in South Boston and flames spread to the upper floor of the two-story house.

Firefighters say the blaze started in the rear portion of the home of Ben Capozzi and Elyse Ward of South Boston. No one was inside the house at the time and there were no injuries.

South Boston firefighters were alerted by a home detection system and were on the scene for several hours.

The home suffered significant fire and smoke damage. The cause is under investigation.
