(Danville, Va.) — Danville City Manager Ken Larking declared a state of emergency in Danville after violent storms ripped through town Sunday afternoon.

Westover Drive at Woodlawn Ave. was blocked. The 5000 block of Riverside Dr. at Reuben’s has since reopened but the restaurant suffered heavy damage. Waterlick Garage and MedExpress off Timberlake Road (Lynchburg, Va.) suffered extensive damage and the garage appeared to have been destroyed. Numerous trees are down along Westover Drive and the city estimates that many customers will be without power Monday and Tuesday. A home on Oakhaven Dr. off Westover (pictured above) was destroyed when two large trees came crashing down on top of it. There were no reports of injuries.

The latest reports of outages are scattered in Danville and Pittsylvania County. It is estimated that 3,000 to 4,000 customers are without power. These numbers include the initial reports of feeder circuits out of service in the Westover and Brosville areas.

Contract crews will arrive Monday to assist in power restoration. However, due to the extent of the storm damage, the city cannot estimate the time needed for restoration of power.

Residents should be prepared to be without power into Monday and Tuesday.
