(White Sulphur Springs, W. Va.) – WBTM and WAKG won six awards for outstanding broadcasting Saturday at the Virginias Associated Press Broadcasters Awards banquet.

Kathryn Davis received the prestigious Douglas Southall Freeman Award for her  work on the “Healthbeat” series. The judges said the program provides “important information on a range of health issues (and) could and should be syndicated.”

News Director Jack Garrett received first place awards in three categories: Best Reporter; Best Feature/Human Interest story for “Danville Remembers the Virginia Tech Victims on the 10th Anniversary of the Tragedy;” and best Spot News for his reporting on Danville’s new police chief and his emphasis on community policing.

Sports Director Austin Bunn received a meritorious award as Best Sports Anchor and a second place award for Outstanding Sports Coverage of the Virginias for his coverage of GW football.

The 2018 Virginias Associated Press Awards recognize radio and television broadcasters in Virginia and West Virginia for work produced during 2017. The awards are presented annually and judged by peer journalists from other states.

The awards were presented during a luncheon at The Greenbrier Resort in White Sulphur Springs, W. Va.
