(Pittsylvania County, Va.) – The driver of a Pittsylvania County school bus has been charged with failing to yield following a Tuesday morning accident that sent ten people to the hospital.

The bus driver, 83-year-old John Henry Patterson of Danville, was not hurt; however, 8 of the 18 students on board his bus were treated for non-life threatening injuries.

State Police say the bus was hit by a 1992 Toyota after the bus driver failed to yield the right of way while making a left turn from Oakland Drive onto the Mount Cross Road.

The 17-year-old driver of the Toyota and a 15-year-old passenger were also transported to the emergency room. Both were treated for minor injuries. State police say the driver and passenger were both wearing seat belts.

The accident happened about 7:50 Tuesday morning and brought traffic on the busy roadway to a standstill.

State Police are continuing their investigation.
