(Danville, VA) – Mayor John Gilstrap bid farewell earlier this week at the business meeting of City Council, saying, “I truly love this city, and it has been a joy, pleasure and privilege to serve as long as I have.” Gilstrap’s will end his tenure as mayor and council member on June 30. He did not seek re-election earlier this year.

“It has been an absolute pleasure working with you,”  he said to council members.  When he addressed the citizens of Danville he stated, “I have met a lot of good people, and I appreciate every relationship I have had with our citizens and enjoyed working with you and for you.”

A graduate of Clemson University and an Army veteran John Gilstrap joined city council in 2010 and was selected to the mayoral seat by council members in 2016.  Adam Tomer will take over the seat after elections earlier this year and members of city council will elect a new mayor and vice mayor on July 2nd.
