(Danville, Va.) — The City of Danville is looking into changes to offset a future deficit that’s expected to total in the millions.

City Council on Tuesday received a five-year financial report that showed Danville faces a structural budget deficit that will leave a projected shortfall of $22.3 million.

To close the gap, City Council will consider service reductions, changes in employee benefits, and revenue enhancements.

The Natural Resource Network study recommended several ways the city can cut costs, including not filling some vacant positions and closing one of seven fire stations in Danville.

The report said council should consider consolidating the library system by closing the Westover branch. An alternative to closing the library could be development of a joint city-county library system as part of a broader discussion of shared services.

NRN members have been gathering financial data and evaluating city operations since November.
