(Charlottesville, VA) –  Jurors handed down a guilty verdict for Ohio native James Fields Jr. on Friday afternoon for the murder of Heather Heyer.

Fields’ was charged with multiple charges including first degree murder after he sped down a Charlottesville street that was teeming with protectors in August of 2017 striking several individuals including Heyer.  The nine-day trial featured days of emotional testimony from victims who were seriously injured in the crash.

During much of the testimony, Fields betrayed no emotion and appeared apathetic as his victims described their pain and lasting injuries. Courtney Commander, whose knee was grazed by the car, said that in the first days of testimony, Fields mouthed the words, “I’m sorry” at her, prompting her and two other victims to leave the courtroom.

Sentencing is set to begin this week with the same Jury that levied the 9 guilty verdicts.
