(Danville, VA) – Danville honored a local hero by renaming an 8.5 mile section of Route 29, the Wendell O. Scott, Senior Memorial Highway on Saturday.  Both city and civic leaders were in attendance along with family members to show their appreciation to the late NASCAR legend.

The Danville native broke NASCAR’s color barrier becoming the first African-American to win a race at the highest level.  He was also the first African-American inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame.  “It means progression. It means acknowledgment of a legacy. It means unification as a community. It’s just a wonderful day,” according to Warrick Scott, Wendell’s Grandson.  Signs are placed along the Danville Expressway.
