(Richmond, VA) – Virginia Governor Ralph Northram is proposing a pay increase for Virginia’s teachers as he prepares his next budget proposal.  He plans to add $88 million to what was already a 3% pay raise for teachers and bumping it to 5% for next year.

“Virginia has slipped in its ability to compete for teaching talent,” Northram said. The proposed pay increase would be the single largest pay boost for teachers in 15 years.

The new budget would also begin the steps to increase Virginia’s rainy day fund which the Governor has made a point of wanting to raise by several hundred million dollars by the end of his term in 2022.
