(Pittsylvania County, Va.) — A protester was arrested in Pittsylvania County after chaining herself to a piece of equipment, temporarily halting work on the Mountain Valley Pipeline.
The sheriff’s department received a 911 call about 10:30 Friday morning from a resident in the 300 block of Oxford Road in Chatham. Deputies arrived to find a group of 9 protesters at a pipeline construction site in the northwest portion of the county.
One of the protesters, 27-year-old Emma Karen Howell of Winter Park, Florida, had shackled herself to a drilling platform. Deputies cut the chains and Howell was arrested without further incident. She was charged with criminal trespass, a misdemeanor, and freed after a magistrate placed her under a $2,500 unsecured bond.
No injuries were reported.
Sheriff’s deputies were assisted by Virginia State Police and the Pittsylvania County Commonwealth’s Attorney.
