(Pittsylvania County, Va.) — Investigators say someone set a half-million dollar piece of equipment on fire at a Mountain Valley Pipeline construction site in Pittsylvania County.

A passerby spotted the smoke and flames about 11 p.m. Saturday and called 911.

Sheriff’s deputies responded and found a vehicle on fire in the 2900 block of Grassland Drive in the Smith Mountain community. The equipment was located on the site of the Mountain Valley Pipeline construction right-of-way. The Caterpillar PL 87 sustained approximately $500,000 in damage.

The fire marshal determined that the fire was set intentionally. No other equipment was damaged.
