(Mt. Airy, N.C.) — HanesBrands is closing its sock manufacturing plant in Mount Airy, N.C., leaving about 220 employees without jobs.

The company plans to halt all production at the plant by October. The facility makes Hanes and Champion socks and Hanes says it will offer jobs to the affected employees within the company’s nearby distribution centers.

Hanes operates distribution centers in nearby Rural Hall, and in Winston-Salem and High Point, as well as elsewhere in North Carolina and Virginia.

The Mount Airy plant began operations in 1979.
