(Washington, D.C.) — Virginia Senator Tim Kaine is asking his fellow lawmakers to consider voting on gun legislation.

Kaine took to the Senate floor Tuesday and addressed two bills that would strengthen background checks. One up for debate would consider a universal background check system. Kaine said the second would address a weakness in the current system, which would make certain someone would not be able to purchase a firearm, unless he or she passed the background check first.

According to Sen. Kaine, “we haven’t had a meaningful debate about gun violence and gun safety regulations and laws on the floor of this body since April of 2013.”
