DANVILLE, Va. – A 12-year-old girl was struck while getting off her school bus Wednesday afternoon.

Danville Police say the bus had stopped on Elizabeth Street and the child was crossing the street when she was hit by a southbound Chevy pickup owned by Thompson Trucking of Concord. The girl, who is a student at Westwood Middle School, was conscious and was transported to Sovah Health Danville for treatment of undisclosed injuries.

According to the police report, the pickup truck crossed over to the northbound side of Elizabeth Street to get around the stopped school bus. Witnesses said the bus’s warning lights were in operation when the child was hit.

Police charged 81-year-old David Maurice Durham, of Durham, North Carolina, with passing a stopped school bus.

The accident happened about 2:34 p.m. at the intersection of Haynesworth Drive and Elizabeth Street.
