MARTINSVILLE, Va. – A Martinsville officer who was shot at the end of a police pursuit is expected to recover.

According to Virginia State Police, the incident left the officer and a 37-year-old man with non-life threatening gunshot wounds.

The pursuit started shortly after 9:30 pm Wednesday on Memorial Boulevard at Askin Street in Martinsville after the driver refused to stop his Toyyota pickup truck. The officer gave chase. As the driver of the pickup continued into Henry County, he jumped from the moving vehicle and fled on foot.

Police said the truck continued to roll down an embankment, crossed the Joseph Martin Highway, and struck an embankment.

Martinsville Police located the man behind the Glen Ridge Apartments. That’s when police say he opened fire, striking one of the officers. Police returned fire and hit the suspect.

The suspect was flown to Roanoke Memorial Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. The officer was flown to Wake Forest Baptist Health in North Carolina, where he is being treated for a non-life threatening gunshot wound.

State Police are continuing their investigation and say charges are pending.
