HENRY COUNTY, Va. – A Martinsville Police Officer was taken to the hospital after being shot Wednesday night. His condition is unknown.

WSLS 10 reports that the officer was involved in a pursuit that started in the city and ended on Joseph Martin Highway in Henry County. The chase ended in gunfire in front of the Glen Ridge Apartments, where a large police presence was reported during the night.

A suspect is in custody.

Witnesses reported hearing screams followed by gunshots. A pickup truck said to have belonged to the suspect crashed into a front yard at the end of the chase.

Virginia State Police is investigating the shooting.

The officer’s name has not been released.
