DANVILLE, Va. – Danville Police confirm that two people died in an accident that shut down South Main Street late Wednesday afternoon.

Police, fire and rescue units responded to the accident scene on South Main near the Dollar General store.

A police spokesman confirms that there were two fatalities.

The busy thoroughfare was closed to traffic immediately after the two-vehicle wreck, which happened about 5:00 p.m.

Danville Police issued the following statement:

Police, Fire, and Rescue units responded to a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Updike Pl. and South Main St. at approximately 5:06 pm.

The preliminary investigation revealed that at the time of collision, a 2000 Nissan Altima 4-door pulled off of Updike Pl. and into the path of a 2014 GMC Sierra Pickup that was traveling in the southbound lane of South Main St. Both occupants of the Nissan were pronounced dead at the scene.

The investigation is ongoing, and motorists should expect a slight delay while emergency personnel continue to work at the scene.

Additional information will be released after family notifications have been made.
