RICHMOND, Va. – Governor Ralph Northam delivered his State of the Commonwealth address Tuesday, telling legislators he will move forward with a “Virginia 2020” plan of “common-sense” measures he said were demanded by voters following the November election.

With Democrats controlling the House and Senate for the first time in 20 years, Northam called upon the General Assembly to tighten gun laws. “This common sense legislation does not violate the Second Amendment,” said Northam. The governor declared that “no one is calling out the National Guard (and) no one is going door-to-door to confiscate guns.”

The plan would also decriminalize marijuana possession, raise the minimum wage, and ratify the Equal Right Amendment. The governor also called for passage of healthcare reforms and called on legislators to raise the minimum wage. He also wants to abolish Lee-Jackson Day and make Election Day a holiday in Virginia.

The reforms and the state’s two-year budget will all be considered within the next 60 days.
