DANVILLE, Va. – Danville Police talked a suicidal woman out of jumping from the Martin Luther King Bridge Thursday morning.

A Danville police officer was crossing the bridge about 7:20 a.m. when he spotted a female displaying signs of mental distress. The 18-year-old was threatening to jump into the Dan River. Police, with assistance from a CIT counselor with Danville Pittsylvania Community Services who happened to be passing through at the time, convinced her to seek help. Negotiations lasted about 30 minutes and the bridge was reopened shortly before 8:00 am.

The woman was transported to Sovah Health Danville, where she continues to be evaluated.
