RICHMOND, Va. – Seven bills that would restrict gun use and sales are a step closer to reality in Virginia.

The Democratic-led Senate Judiciary Committee voted Monday to forward a host of bills expanding background checks, limiting purchases to one-gun-per-moth, and allowing localities to ban guns in public places. So-called “red flag” legislation would allow for the removal of a gun from anyone deemed to be a danger to themselves or others.

The bills passed Monday on a near party-line vote. If passed by the full Senate in the days ahead, the measures will then head to Democratic Gov. Ralph Northam’s desk for his signature.
A bill that would have banned assault weapons failed to advance out of the same Senate committee last week when moderate Democrats joined Republicans in opposing the measure.
Identical bills earlier won approval in Virginia’s house of Delegates.
Democrats won control of both chambers in November for the first time in two decades.
