Rock of Ages - time travel to the 80s at the DPAC Oct. 2011
"Just a small town girl..." is the first lyric in Journey's "Don't Stop Believin.'"   ...and it's the last song you'll hear when you see the 80's rock musical "Rock of Ages," during it's run at Durham Performing Arts Center the last week of October 2011.    This classic story of two dreamers chasing their dreams while finding, losing, and rediscovering love is built around the Journey lyric.   The talented band performed throughout, playing medleys of popular classic 80's rock songs from artists & bands like Pat Benatar, Whitesnake, Twisted Sister, Styx, Foreigner, Poison, David Lee Roth, and many more.     ...and even though opening night (October 25th, 2011) was a Tuesday night, the house was packed and rockin'!    The characters - from lovable narrator Lonny to the dreamers in love rockstar-hopeful Drew & actress-determined Sherrie made you laugh with them and feel for them throughout their ups and downs as they  tried to accomplish their dreams while trying to save L.A.'s Sunset Strip and the Bourbon Room from redevelopers taking over and killing the "scene."   This show's interpretations of so many great songs lifted spirits and dazzled the senses.   The costume and set changes seemed to blend and morph seemlessly making for a fast-paced, exciting show for rockers and everyday people alike.   Bravo "Rock of Ages" for doing something a little different with a Broadway-style musical.   More info:   Reviewer:  Barry Shelton   (courtesy press photos)
