(Danville, Va.) – A program designed to get drugs off the streets and dealers behind bars is paying big dividends in Southside Virginia.

Virginia State Police have made 156 arrests and filed more than 230 felony and misdemeanor charges in just the first three months of the crackdown, dubbed “Operation Safe Streets.”

The arrests were made in Danville and Pittsylvania County between May and July.

State and local police seized 79 guns and confiscated marijuana with a street value of nearly $1.5 million.

Authorities also seized cocaine, crack cocaine and heroin. 87 of the 156 arrests were for drug-related offenses.
