(Rocky Mount, Va.) — A man was shot and wounded during a struggle with a Rocky Mount town police officer.

Virginia State Police say the incident happened around midnight Saturday.

The man who was shot was the subject of an emergency custody order, issued just before the confrontation.

An officer located the man and stopped his police cruiser in the Rocky Mount Plaza shopping center. As he approached, the man assaulted the officer. During the fight, the officer shot and wounded the man. The extent of his injuries isn’t known and the state police news release did not identify the officer or the other individual, who was taken to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital for treatment of a non-life threatening injury. The officer also was treated for injuries and released from the hospital.

The officer has been placed on paid administrative leave during the investigation into the shooting.
