(Rocky Mount, Va.) — Virginia beat out four other states for a major bakery expansion. Gov. Ralph Northam announced Monday that Empire Bakery is expanding in Franklin County, adding 75 jobs at its bakery in Rocky Mount.

The company will invest $10.4 million to expand operations there. Utah, Texas, Arizona, and Oklahoma were all competing with Virginia for the project.

Empire is a commercial producer of ready-made cakes, cookies, and single-serve desserts.

Volvo Trucks is also expanding its New River Valley Plant in Dublin. The company has hired around 300 new workers at its southwest Virginia plant since the beginning of September amid growing demand for big rigs.

Spokesman John Mies says the company’s 2018 retail sales in North America and Canada are up 60 percent from the same time last year. With the new hiring, the plant in Dublin has 3,500 workers. That’s compared with 2,600 at the beginning of 2018 and 1,700 in January 2017.
