(Danville, Va.) – Danville Mayor Alonzo Jones helped get a family out of their home after passersby spotted smoke and flames coming from the chimney of an apartment in the Cedar Terrace complex overnight.

An off-duty firefighter was among the first on the scene after he spotted smoke coming from the back of the building on Memorial Drive. Units responded to apartment 811 about 8:15 p.m. and made quick work of the fire.

There were no reports of injuries and the Red Cross is reportedly assisting the family.
