(Danville, Va.) — Gov. Ralph Northam announced Wednesday that Virginia’s request for a federal disaster declaration to address the damage from Tropical Storm Michael has been approved by President Trump.

Northam sent a letter to the president on Dec. 5 requesting the declaration after the Commonwealth was hammered by damaging winds, flooding, tornadoes, and landslides from Michael between Oct. 9 and Oct. 16. The president approved the request on Tuesday.

Damage to infrastructure alone in Danville has been estimated at about $6.5 million.

FEMA officials are reviewing the damage prior to reimbursing the city for much on the cleanup cost.
