DANVILLE, Va. – Around 420,000 customers were without power up and down the Eastern Seaboard and in Ohio as severe thunderstorms moved through the region.

A survey of outages maps for electric utilities from South Carolina up to Maine indicated that thousands of homes and businesses were without power just before midnight Thursday. The Carolinas, Maryland, Pennsylvania, New York and Ohio recorded a particularly high number of outages. Scattered outages were also reported in Southwest and Southside Virginia overnight.

The storms also downed trees and wrecked havoc on trick-or-treaters. Tornado watches and warnings were posted in Halifax and Charlotte Counties in Virginia and just across the border in Caswell, Rockingham, and Guilford Counties in North Carolina Thursday night.

In North Carolina, a number of trees fell onto homes, vehicles, and across roads in the Triad region. There were no immediate reports of injuries associated with the fast moving storms.
