DANVILLE, Va. – A Danville grandmother and grandson were critically injured in a house fire late Saturday night after their American Legion Boulevard home was destroyed by flames.

20-year-old Hunter Rhoads was pulled from his burning bedroom by his father, Jesse, after a 9-year-old ran from his grandmother’s house next door to tell his parents that his grandmother’s house was on fire.

Jesse Rhoads, ran into the inferno and managed to get his son out through a bedroom window as neighbors helped rescue the grandmother and her friend. All three were taken to the hospital for treatment. James and his grandmother were later airlifted to the UNC Burn Center in Chapel Hill. James is on life-support. Another person received minor injuries but did not require transport.

Firefighters say the 9-year-old grandson, Damian, went next door to visit his grandmother when he heard the smoke alarm and ran home to alert his father.

When firefighters arrived, all of the occupants were out of the home. They found flames shooting from the roof and windows, traced the origin to a bedroom and extinguished the flames. They also rescued three cats and a dog.

Three engines, a ladder truck, and four support vehicles responded, along with 19 firefighters.

Danville firefighters were on the scene for about three-and-a-half hours.

The cause of the fire has yet to be determined.
