ROANOKE, Va. – The state medical examiner has positively identified the body found in a Chatham farm field last week as a Raleigh man who went missing after trying to sell a car to a buyer from Craigslist.

William “Andy” Banks’ body was found on Beechnut Road in Chatham.

Banks was last seen the afternoon of Saturday, Sept. 12, after his family said he was meeting someone in the K&W Cafeteria parking lot at Cameron Village in Raleigh about selling his 2011 Silver Range Rover Sport.

Banks’ SUV was located in Danville two days later.

34-year-old Justin Fernando Merritt, of Danville, Virginia has been charged with murder in Banks’ death and is being held in Wake County, N.C. under a $2 million bond. Public records show Merritt once lived on Dry Fork Road – which is around a mile from the site where police recovered Banks’ body.

Merritt is also charged with robbery, larceny of a motor vehicle, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon in connection with the stolen vehicle.
