ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, N.C. – A Ruffin man is behind bars, charged with firing shots at a Rockingham County Sheriff’s  detective.

52-year-old Franklin Waite is charged with attempted murder in connection with the shooting. He’s also charged with assault with a deadly weapon against a law enforcement officer, and eight counts of discharging a firearm into an occupied dwelling.

Investigators said Waite fired shots at a detective following a chase Friday afternoon.

Rockingham County Sheriff Sam Page said it started around 11 a.m. with a report about a man firing shots into several homes. Callers said the man was in a burgundy Nissan truck.

Deputy Z. Warner located the truck and driver, but Waite refused to pull over and the deputy chased the vehicle to Cunningham Mill Road, where gunshots were exchanged.

Neither the deputy nor the suspect was hit during the exchange.

Waite was arrested and placed in the Rockingham County Detention Center under a $5,000,000 secured bond. He is set to appear in court on Nov. 2.
