On Tuesday, the Virginia Department of Education reported it made a mistake in calculating state aid for K-12 schools, an error that is leaving divisions with less funding than expected. According to the Richmond Times-Dispatch, the error was from a failure to reflect last year’s decision to hold localities harmless from the elimination of the state’s portion of the sales tax on groceries.

Local school divisions will now receive $201 million less than expected, including $58 million less for the current school year. For Danville Public Schools that means the district will now receive over $1.2 million less than expected over the next two years.

For fiscal year 2023, DPS will receive $365,255.13 less and for fiscal year 2024 the district will receive $902,436.30 less than expected. DPS Public Information Officer, Lanie Davis, said via e-mail that they are working with the school board and local legislators, to determine how they can minimize the impacts on the schools.

On Wednesday, Governor Glenn Youngkin asked the House and Senate budget leaders to use resources to address the error. Youngkin said in a letter that the financial position the state is in will allow them to cover the gap in school aid, according to the Associated Press.
