Pittsylvania County has announced plans for the Pittsylvania County Public Safety Memorial. Tunstall District Supervisor Vic Ingram said in a post on Facebook, that the memorial will be dedicated in the memory of two men who died serving the citizens of Pittsylvania County and to honor the service of all who have served or who are currently serving in the service of fire, rescue or telecommunications.

“The design is that of a pentagon to reflect the strength, courage and commitment of those who serve us. The length of the inner perimeter is 9 feet 11 inches. The center piece will be a black granite base with three metal flames located on top reaching a height of 9 feet 11 inches,” said Ingram.

The base of the memorial will have the names of Gerald Bostic and Sam Bradner. Bostic was a member of the Danville Life Saving Crew and was killed in a traffic crash in 1967 while enroute to Tunstall High School. Bradner was a member of Tunstall Fire & Rescue and was killed in 1997 in a fire truck crash while responding to a structure fire.

The foundation of the memorial will have individual pavers with the names of individuals who have ever served Pittsylvania County in fire, rescue or telecommunications. The individual pavers can be purchased for $150.00 per paver.

The Board of Supervisors endorsed the construction of the Pittsylvania County Public Safety Memorial in July. The memorial  is expected to cost $250k and be paid for by donations, grants and the sale of the individual pavers.

The memorial will be located on County-owned property along Main Street in Chatham across from the public safety building. Those wishing to make a donation can call Ingram at 434-685-5555.
