PITTSYLVANIA COUNTY, VA — A Pittsylvania County home was destroyed in a Monday afternoon fire.

The Chatham Star Tribune reports that homeowner Ruben Dale Dawson was pressure washing the outside of his Long Island home when he noticed smoke coming from the front of the house. He grabbed a garden hose and a cell phone to call 911.

The Hurt Volunteer Fire Department responded but was unable to save the residence.

No one else was inside the home at the time of the fire and Dawson is staying with a relative.

The Pittsylvania County Fire Marshal is investigating the cause.
