HENRY COUNTY, VA — Court records show that the Henry County man charged in an April shooting death was earlier convicted of second-degree murder in the death of his wife.
75-year-old William Matthews is charged with first-degree murder in the April 25 shooting death of 55-year-old Mack Watkins outside BG’s Express in Henry County. Witnesses say Watkins was pumping gas when Matthews opened fire.
According to court records, Matthews served 12 years for murder in the July 1983 shooting death of his wife, Daisy Matthews. He pleaded guilty to second-degree murder the following year under an agreement with prosecutors.
Mathews remains jailed and is scheduled to undergo a mental evaluation before his next court appearance in Henry County.
