DANVILLE, Va. – The American Red Cross is assisting a Danville family who lost their home in a Tuesday morning fire.
The Danville Fire Department responded to 868 Valley St. shortly after 9 a.m to find heavy smoke billowing from the home.
The thick, gray smoke was visible for blocks as firefighters worked to contain the blaze, which started in the basement and engulfed the entire house.
Crews began an exterior attack because of the intensity of the flames. As firefighters were beginning their work, the house back-drafted and blew debris onto the ladder truck.
Both occupants were out of the home at the time and there were no injuries in the fire.
Crews were on scene for more than five hours.
The Danville Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause of the blaze, which started in the basement and spread to the attic of the single-story house.
