The City of Danville has launched a new online portal that simplifies the process for obtaining special event permits for festivals, concerts, races, parades, assemblies, and similar events.
Powered by OpenGov, the user-friendly portal replaces the previous manual process that required visits to multiple departments. Event organizers can now apply for permits, pay required fees, and track application status all in one place.
“Bringing the process into one centralized system helps City departments coordinate more effectively and respond to requests more efficiently,” Parks and Recreation Director Bill Sgrinia said. “That means smoother planning for organizers and better-prepared events.”
To get started, applicants create a user account with basic contact information, including name, address, phone number, and email address. This allows the City to send updates, notifications, and permit details directly by email, phone, or through the portal dashboard.
A special event permit is required for events that are open to the public, involve alcohol, require road closures, or impact traffic flow. Examples include festivals, concerts, races, parades, and other events that temporarily alter the normal use of public spaces.
“Special event permits play an important role in keeping both event participants and the public safe,” Police Capt. Erica Land said. “This portal helps ensure events are properly reviewed and coordinated while still being easy for organizers to use.”
A permit is not required for routine, informal activities that do not involve alcohol service or road closures and do not disrupt traffic or public access. Examples include family reunions, picnics, outings, and other casual uses of public spaces consistent with their intended purpose.
The City of Danville’s website also has information on other permits.
