The City of Danville today received a resignation letter from City Councilman Madison Whittle, effective Tuesday, Jan. 13.

The resignation is required as Whittle will represent the 49th District in the Virginia House of Delegates when the General Assembly convenes on Wednesday, Jan. 14.

Whittle was elected to Danville City Council in 2016 and was serving his third term, which had three years remaining.

In accordance with City procedures, City Council will appoint a qualified candidate to fill the vacant seat until a special election can be held. Applications from interested residents will be accepted beginning Wednesday. City Council will select finalists from the applicant pool and conduct interviews during public meetings.

The vacancy must be filled within 45 days.
