Forecasters have adjusted the projections ahead of high impact winter storm that will move into the area on Saturday afternoon. According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, the southside is set to receive 5 to 8 inches on snow and up to 2 inches of sleet.
The storm is expected to last through Monday morning. Heavy snow will fall along/north of US-460, up to a foot or more in the Shenandoah Valley, with 5 to 8 inches south of US-460 to the NC/VA state line and lighter amounts in NC. Sleet will mix in to the south, significantly cutting snow totals down to only a few inches in NC.
Winds and weight of snow or ice on tree limbs may down power lines and could cause power outages. Travel could be very difficult to impossible.
If travel is absolutely necessary, drive with extreme caution. Consider taking a winter storm kit along with you, including such items as tire chains, booster cables, flashlight, shovel, blankets and extra clothing. Also take water, a first aid kit, and anything else that would help you survive in case you become stranded.
