An inmate was found deceased at the Pittsylvania County Jail early Monday morning. At approximately 12:50 am deputies discovered an unresponsive inmate in his cell while conducting their required security rounds.
Deputies immediately initiated life-saving measures, including CPR. Emergency medical rescue personnel arrived shortly thereafter and continued resuscitation efforts. Despite all attempts, the inmate was pronounced deceased by rescue personnel.
Preliminary evidence suggests a medical event, however the death remains under active investigation. In accordance with protocol, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner was immediately notified.
An autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause and manner of death. Currently reports have been submitted to the
Board of Local and Regional Jails for their regulatory authority for death reviews. When the Medical Examiner’s findings are received all reports will be submitted to the Commonwealth Attorney for a thorough determination of the facts.
The identity of the deceased is being withheld pending next-of-kin notification.
