DANVILLE, Va. – Danville firefighters responded to a pair of  fires at commercial businesses on the Piney Forest Road on New Year’s Eve.

The most recent was reported shortly after noon Tuesday at 1101 Piney Forest, the Emanuel Temple. Crews arrived at 12:32 p.m. at the storefront church to find smoke on both floors and coming from the roof of the building.

Firefighters began work inside the structure as well as on the roof, where they found smoldering  fire. Crews had to remove the ceiling and roofing on a portion of the building to extinguish the fire.

No one was inside the building and there were no injuries.

Four engines, two ladder trucks, a safety officer and three chief officers responded with crews remaining on scene for four and-a-half hours.

The cause of the fire was determined to be an electrical circuit that had malfunctioned.

Earlier in the day, Danville firefighters put out a fire at the Astoria Hotel North on Piney Forest Road. That fire was confined to one room of the two-story building and was caused by cigarette ash on a couch. No one was in the room at the time and there were no injuries.
