DANVILLE, Va. – A man was taken into custody after crashing his car in North Danville early Friday morning.

Police, fire and rescue responded to East Franklin Turnpike about 12:45 a.m. for a motor vehicle fire. The car left the road near Roman Eagle Nursing home and struck a tree in the median before crossing into the opposite lanes and traveling down an embankment. The vehicle crashed and burned.

The Danville Fire Department contained the blaze to the engine compartment and the driver was uninjured. He was arrested at the scene. His name was not available.

Meanwhile, residents were evacuated from a Cedar Place apartment following a gas leak Thursday evening.

The Danville Fire Department responded to 162 Cedar Place just after 6:30 p.m. after a resident detected a strong odor of gas. Four apartments were affected but only two were occupied. Gas was shut off to several buildings in the complex until repairs could be made.

There were no injuries.
