(Huddleston, Va.) — The Department of Game and Inland Fisheries says a 9-year-old boy drowned on Smith Mountain Lake Saturday while jumping on a water trampoline without a life jacket.

His body was recovered from the bottom of the lake Saturday night. The boy lived in Durham, N.C.

Authorities say the boy was jumping on a water trampoline when those watching him realized he was missing. He was playing in the water at a private home near Smith Mountain Lake State Park.

Search and rescue teams were called around 6 p.m. and recovered the body in about 20 feet of water three hours later.

This was the second drowning on the popular recreational lake this year.
