(Chatham, Va.) – One woman was killed and another person was seriously injured in a house fire on Davis Road in Chatham Thursday afternoon.

Multiple units were dispatched to the home of Chatham Mayor Roy Byrd and his wife, Lois, just after 2:00 p.m. Smoke was pouring out of the two-story brick home when the first units arrived.

After the fire was brought under control, a woman was found dead in the basement of the house.

Roy Byrd was wearing an oxygen mask and transported by ambulance to the hospital. He was later transferred to UVA Medical Center in Charlottesville.

Several rescue units responded along with state and local police and Pittsylvania County sheriff’s deputies. Firefighters from Chatham, Gretna and Blairs fought the blaze.

The woman’s body was transported to the Medical Examiner’s Office in Roanoke.
