(Danville, Va.) – An ordinance proposed by Councilman Adam Tomer was approved by Danville City Council Tuesday night, giving the city the strictest tethering law in Virginia.

Pet owners will no longer be allowed to tether pets outside when it’s hotter than 85 degrees. The ordinance also forbids the outside tethering of all female pets in heat.

The ordinance restricts tethering outside to two hours in a 24-hour period, down from the current four hours.

The changes received the unanimous approval of council.

Violation is a class 2 misdemeanor carrying possible jail time and a fine of up to $1,000.
