(Danville, Va.) — Virginians are voting in races that could help determine political control of Congress. Tuesday is Election Day as voters make picks in a U.S. Senate race and several U.S. House seats. Four competitive races for GOP-held House seats could help determine whether Democrats are able to flip control of the House.

Danville Registrar Peggy Petty is expecting about 50 percent of the city’s roughly 28,000 voters to head to the polls Tuesday. She says interest has been high, especially in the Congressional contest with no clear favorite.

Two newcomers are vying for the 5th District Congressional seat. Democrat Leslie Cockburn and Republican Denver Riggleman are locked in a tight race that has gone down to the wire. The sprawling district includes 21 counties and stretches from west of Dulles International Airport to the North Carolina border.

Cockburn, of Rappahannock County, has received endorsements from Democratic Sen. Mark Warner and former Republican Sen. John Warner — while Republican Denver Riggleman of Nelson County has been paid visits by Vice President Mike Pence and White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders. He has also been endorsed by President Donald Trump, who through his vice president, praised the U.S. military veteran and Virginia distillery owner as a “principled conservative” who is “committed to working with” the White House.

In the U.S. Senate race, Democratic incumbent Tim Kaine is ahead by as much as twenty points, according to the Washington Post.

Kaine has raised over $22,000,000, and has spent over $4.5 million on ads, according to numbers from the Virginia Public Access Project.

Meanwhile, Corey Stewart has raised almost $3,000,000 and spent about $297,000 on ads. Stewart has relied more on social media to get his message across.
