DANVILLE, Va. – Danville City Council has voted to send a resolution to Richmond asking legislators to authorize passage of a sales tax increase to fund improvements to public schools.
The action came during city council’s business meeting and now heads to the General Assembly.
The sales tax increase would be a maximum of one-percent.
Council voted unanimously for the resolution. Two members were absent and Mayor Alonzo Jones abstained from voting on the measure due to a conflict of interest.
Voters would have the final say in the matter. If approved by the General Assembly, a local referendum would be held on the one-percent tax increase.
The school system has identified “significant” capital improvements needed at local schools.
