DANVILLE, Va. – Danville Police have made an arrest in a Wednesday homicide but have yet to release the suspect’s name.

According to a news release, authorities “have arrested a person who was involved in the homicide of 40-year-old Melvin Wayne Smith.” Police arrested the individual on unrelated charges and say they will identify the person when charges are filed in the fatal shooting.

The investigation is still active. Danville Police say they worked late into the night with other law enforcement agencies in making the arrest.

Officers responded to the 300 block of Summit Road about 6:40 Wednesday morning and found the 40-year-old Smith lying in the front yard of his home. He was unresponsive and was pronounced dead of a gunshot wound to the chest. Police said at the time that his murder was not a random act.
