CHATHAM, Va. – The overcrowding problem continues at the Pittsylvania County Jail in Chatham, which is currently running about 300 percent above capacity.

The aging facility – which was built in the 1980s – was designed to hold 36 prisoners but now houses more than 100 inmates. Female prisoners continue to be housed at the Blue Ridge Regional Correctional Facility in Lynchburg.

The county’s courthouse is also more than 100 years old and is not equipped for current technology needs.

Pittsylvania County leaders would like to replace both facilities but the county lacks the funding to make it happen.
